England captain Steven Gerrard believes his team-mates went some way to rebuilding their confidence after seeing off Bulgaria 4-0.

Jermain Defoe scored a hat-trick whilst Adam Johnson netted his first international goal as the Three Lions began their Euro 2012 qualifying campaign with a victory.

Fabio Capello's men next face Switzerland on Tuesday as they look to make it back-to-back successes.

And after their infamous performance at the 2010 World Cup, Gerrard was delighted to see the team respond at Wembley on Friday.

"We've made a statement," said the Liverpool midfielder.

"I've said, after the disappointment of the World Cup, it's going to take time before this team can be really ready to challenge the big sides."

He continued: "The important thing now is not to get carried away and try to build on that.

"Tuesday's going to be even more difficult. It's a tough game away from home. They're a good team, Switzerland.

"Hopefully, that will breed a bit of confidence."

Gerrard also reserved praise for hat-trick hero Defoe, who was clinical in front of goal and linked up well with strike partner Wayne Rooney.

"It's important not just to give Jermain all the credit," he said, describing the Tottenham striker as "lethal".

"Wayne got all the assists, so I think the partnership worked - that was the key.

"From front to back, we were superb all over the pitch."
