Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has thanked both former and current Anfield stars for appearing in his testimonial.

The Reds faced Everton on Saturday in the 32-year-old's tribute match, and recorded a 4-1 victory.

The game featured former hero turned villain in now-Manchester United player Michael Owen, as well as Steven Gerrard, who was released by Fabio Capello from the England squad following Friday's win over Bulgaria to appear in the opening ten minutes.

Also among the team were Carragher's 2005 UEFA Champions League-winning team-mates Steve Finnan, Luis Garcia and Jerzy Dudek, as well as Uefa Cup heroes Emile Heskey and Danny Murphy.

Owen was expected to take a penalty late in the first half despite his pantomime-villain role up front, but Carragher took it off his hands to convert instead.

"I asked the referee to give us a penalty before half-time because I was thinking about Michael as I wanted him to score - I totally forgot that people would want me to take one," said Carragher, who hopes to raise £1million for his 23 Foundation through this game and a gala dinner.

"He's my best mate in football and I think it took a lot of courage to come back today and do it for me knowing he would take a lot of stick.

Delighted

"But I think the crowd would have killed him if he'd taken the penalty listening to their reaction."

Carragher was also delighted to see Gerrard be allowed to take part in his ten-minute run out.

"A big thank you to the people at the FA because it is not easy as they had two massive games - but I think it helped they won last night," he added.

"He (Gerrard) is the best player I've ever played with so I'm delighted he was involved.

"England always have to do a warm-down the day after so that was his warm-down."

James Bradley (Liverpool fan) says...

Great game Carra, really enjoyed seeing a lot of previous LFC greats. You''re a cheeky one with that 2nd penalty!! Good luck with raising the million! I was also pleased to see Owen join in too. Respect goes out to him, he served us well when he was at Anfield.

Pat Molloy (Liverpool fan) says...

The song we sing for Carra is perfect. We all dream of a team of Carraghers. Not many others can compare their commitment and dedication to JC. He sat and waited for his chance when he could have moved on, and when he got it he played anywhere he was asked without moaning. If only more players could show this kind of commitment, instead of the revolving door that is our beautiful game.
