Bolton defender Gary Cahill is determined to establish himself in England's back four.

The 24-year-old centre-half could make his first start for Fabio Capello's Three Lions against Switzerland in Tuesday's Euro 2012 qualifier.

Cahill was handed his first cap after replacing the injured Michael Dawson during the second half of Friday's 4-0 win at home to Bulgaria.

The former Aston Villa defender believes his can take advantage of the current injury crisis by taking his place alongside Phil Jagielka in Basle.

England are without John Terry, Rio Ferdinand, Ledley King and Dawson through injury.

Cahill told The People: "From the time you are a little lad you strike to play for your country, so why not put me in against Switzerland? I'm ready for it definitely.

"I think the opportunity is there for a new back four for England.

"I've got little bit of age on my side and the more experienced boys can show me the ropes.

"I've come on and played, made that debut and that's a big thing after constantly thinking, 'when's it going to come?' I can learn from the boys in front of me now.

"I hope to be in the England set-up for years to come."

Capello backing

The England boss is also backing the Trotters defender ahead of the more experienced duo of Matthew Upson and Joleon Lescott.

Capello felt it was an important move to give Cahill his chance from the bench on Friday night.

"I have to decide about the position but Cahill is young and has a big future.

"It is good for the players who have not played a lot of games to come into the team when we are doing well. It is not so easy when we are not."
