Toshack: Poised to quit
Sky Sports News understands John Toshack is set to quit as Wales manager.
Toshack is ready to step down after six years in charge of his country after failing to transform Wales' fortunes.
The news comes in the wake of Wales beginning their Euro 2012 qualifying campaign with a 1-0 defeat to Montenegro on Friday.
The former Real Madrid boss is believed to be prepared to stay on until a replacement is found and could take charge for next month's games against Bulgaria and Switzerland.
Toshack, who is in his second stint in charge of Wales, has come under-fire from some sections with a number of high-profile stars quitting international football after failing to see eye-to-eye with Toshack.
Toshack has won 21 and lost 24 of his 53 games since taking charge in November 2004, but there have been calls for him to quit as Wales have struggled to even challenge for qualification for any tournament under his stewardship.

Why is it when a team are doing well it is always old players ie Savage who come out of the woodwork saying get rid of the manager. Half them never play well for their country, Look at England this summer. The manager could be the best in the world at picking the team But at the end of the day if players do not deliver surely they should take the blame as well. Wales have had some great players over the years but when playing for their country for get it. Some players only available when they want to play does not help either

What Wales lacked in talent they used to make up with passion. When they lost they went down fighting - Toshack has drained that out of the team and it''s time for a change.

" Wales are becoming a joke!! " You''ll find that Wales have always been a joke in international football. Not much to talk about in terms of expectations or history then, eh? "But on the other hand he had a good set of players like Bellamy, Bale and Joe Ledley so he has no real excuse for not gaining qualification..." Oh, please. Bellamy, a guy who''s currently in the Championship? The other two are hardly quality either, I would struggle to call them decent. While Wales have some truly gifted players like Ramsey and Jack Collison, they''ve been beset with unfortunate injuries and you can''t really blame Toshack for having to manage with poor resources and lack of player availability due to said injuries. He''s had a pretty decent smell and will no doubt remain as the greatest Welsh manager of all time.

Reality check here people s.a.f. or Jose could be manager and you still would not qualify for any major tourney not even the fa cup you only have 3-4 good players who are up to standard don¿t kid your self s you are just not good enough the same as England are only good enough to get to a tournament then fail when their, such is life and do me a favour what is with the Mark Hughes fan club yes he was a great player but as a manager what has he ever achieved some one said tosh had a good act to follow hello what tournament did he get you to then. He has not even achieved any thing at club level (even with millions). Stick to rugby guys now that¿s something the welsh are good at

Im english, but iv wanted more british international teams to get into the big tournements, when sparky left the wales job everything went down hill he did a good job, then toshack turns up and suddenly wales are playing like a league two side, The bloke may as well turn up with face paint on, a big red wig and a red nose....wales are looking like a bad joke. i hope they get a good manager in this time. good luck to you wales!

The guy is simply arrogant, at no point has he thought about the team only himself!! He doesnt pick the team on ability only on whether he likes the players or not. Good ridance!

Have to agree, Wales are desperate for a younger manager with fresh ideas. think that theer is lots of young talent coming through that can be supported by some more senior players who still have a lot to offer. i am an England supporter but would love to see Wales qualify for a major tournament.

The best piece of news in years, hopefully now some of the senior players will decide to play again for Wales, I attach no blame to those players who refused to represent Wales whilst Toshack was the manager, he was so aloof and totally lacking in man management. A truely great day for Welsh football, LEAVE NOW.

As an Englishman living in Wales I get to see first hand the total disgust and disappointment in what are, and would still be, passionate Welshmen who want to see a team that at least looks like giving other teams a good game! Yes, Wales may not be blessed with ''world class'' players all over the park but, in players like Craig Bellamy & Gareth Bale, they have two players with awesome pace down the wings. Playing the likes of Ledley and Ramsey in centre midfield would provide a solid base and with James Collins at the back, you have to say that they are not, nor should they be, a team that is in the ''joke'' ranking ratings. Wales have the nucleus of a pretty decent side, with a number of promising under-21 players coming through the international ranks. There is plenty of reason for optimism but the right man is needed to nurture the integration of these promising players into a side that has a solid structure of good, experienced players. My solutions would be to bring in someone like Gary Speed, along with the experience of a mentor like Brian Flynn. There would be a good mix of experience and new, fresh ideas that could only be of benefit for Welsh football in general. This needs to be sorted very soon or Wales could quite easily find themselves propping up this group, which would be disastrous for Welsh football and could set the National team back years. Bringing Toshack back was a bad mistake that was a panic-driven decision at the time. A younger manager, even inexperienced, would have been a better choice, as he could have developed alongside his team, using the experienced ''old'' pros instead of alienating them, as Toshack did! Let''s see if the Welsh FA will ''grow a pair'' and make a radical, forward-thinking appointment?! I wouldn''t hold my breath, though!!!!

The Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) should give parents a choice between Rugby and Soccer. Believe me, for every single Rugby family there are 5 Soccer families living in QWales...for god sake give Soccer a chance! We need Rugby also but play fair for once WAG and the education secretary. Dont leave the post John

I think its time for john toshack to step down, the real problem is that wales don''t produce enough quality players for any manager managing wales or Scotland will always find it very hard qualifying in any competition , The great importance is for a country to produce players who can cope and compete at the highest level in football, back in the 70s Scotland had very good players and it was enough for Scotland to be in the world cup and the European championship, But for wales , nothing has really changed over these many years, Spain had big problems over the years and people always says they where under achieving, the problem was they didn''t have they quality , so over the last 10 year or more , Spain improved from youth level and we know see Spain competing and winning the world cup and European championships , the most important thing is to learn off the rest of the world and make sure your coaching standards are very high bringing the youth through to compete in the 1st place, Holland is a very small nation ,but they know how to produce quality players .

About time - he should never have been given the job in the first place after his stubborn, pig-headed attitude towards the more experienced players. Don''t hang on for a replacement because no manager at all would be better than having you in charge!

At last!! I hope he does leave because Wales are becoming a joke!! I hope we can get someone who knows how to get the best out of his players. I have almost given up on supporting Wales as this guy has just sucked the life out of our national team and we barely win any games theses days. I know the players have some responsibilities but to be a good enough team you need a manager who can get the best out of the players. Look what Mark Hughes achieved and he had the same amount of good players. You only have to look at Northern Ireland's team to know you do not necessarily need good players as long as you have a good manager who knows how to make their teams work and plays. Whereas Toshack has been playing the same style of football for 6 years and we have not won many games at all. I know I have rambled on but I am a passionate Welsh supporter and we are becoming a joke!!!

I do believe that Toshack had a hard job to do after Mark Hughes. But on the other hand he had a good set of players like Bellamy, Bale and Joe Ledley so he has no real excuse for not gaining qualification to any major competitions but I do think it is time Wales got a younger manager with fresh ideas somebody like Gary Speed or Ian Rush would be my first choice if I was a Wales fan.
