Czech Republic suffered an embarrassing home defeat at the hands of Lithuania as their European Championship qualification hopes suffered an early setback.

The home side were expected to have little difficulty in picking up a three-point haul in their opening game of the campaign.

But Darvydas Sernas silenced the crowd in Olomouc when he found the net in the 23rd minute to leave the Czechs languishing at the foot of the table.

Milan Baros missed a glorious opportunity to level for the hosts when he saw his penalty five minutes before the interval beaten away by Zydrunas Karcemarskas.

With defending champions Spain looking odds on to top the group, the battle for second place is expected to be fierce.

Scotland's blushes were spared by Stephen McManus as he headed home an injury-time winner after Craig Levein's side had fallen behind against Liechtenstein.
