William Gallas is set to be rushed in to the squad to make his Tottenham debut at West Brom on Saturday.

The French international joined Spurs on a one-year deal at the end of August after leaving arch-rivals Arsenal on a free transfer, but was understood to not be match fit.

Manager Harry Redknapp was reportedly keen to ease the 33-year-old back into action having struggled with injuries for the Gunners last campaign.

However, the injury to Michael Dawson on England duty, and the continued problems for Ledley King, means Spurs are short at the back, and a reserve match was hastily arranged against QPR for Gallas to get 70 minutes under his belt.

Praise

Coach Tim Sherwood praised the player's performance in a game Spurs won 3-1.

"It was William's first game for a while and it was excellent for the younger boys to play alongside him," Sherwood said.

"He showed how he squeezes play up the pitch, how he uses his body and he manages the game superbly."

Sebastien Bassong and Younes Kaboul are also in contention to start at The Hawthorns, but Redknapp seems set on playing the former Chelsea defender, who could also play against Werder Bremen in their Champions League opener next Tuesday.

"Thank God I went out and got William Gallas on a free transfer. That is looking an even better bit of business under the circumstances," Redknapp said in reaction to the news of Dawson's injury.
