The Italian officially took charge of the Three Lions in January 2008, on an agreement originally scheduled to run for two-and-a-half years.

Initial success, which saw England canter through their 2010 World Cup qualification campaign, saw his stock rise and he was handed a contract extension ahead of this summer's showpiece in South Africa.

However, having flopped badly in that tournament, many felt the Football Association had been wrong to hand him fresh terms before such an important event.

Capello has started to repair the damage done at the World Cup by making a bright start to Euro 2012 qualification, but the jury remains out for many.

The 64-year-old is not going anywhere any time soon, though, as he fully intends to see out his contract.

Leaving date

England look well set to qualify for the European Championship in two years' time and Capello will be at the helm.

He has, however, made it clear that whatever happens in Poland and Ukraine, he will then relinquish the role and relieve himself of the pressures which accompany one of the toughest jobs in world football.

"Absolutely. Yes," he said when asked whether he would be leaving after Euro 2012, repeating the assertion to make sure everyone understood.

"We have to qualify first of course but after that I will be too old.

"I want to enjoy my life as a pensioner."
