David Beckham has no plans to succeed Fabio Capello as England manager and the midfielder also thinks that Manchester United will provide Wayne Rooney with vital support during a difficult period in his life.

LA Galaxy's Beckham has been installed among a list of possible candidates to become the next Three Lions boss after Capello announced that he would be leaving the role following Euro 2012.

The former United and Real Madrid star is a hero to England fans, having earned 115 caps to date, and his contract in America will have expired when Capello stands down.

Beckham has been told by the Italian that he does not feature in his plans for Euro 2012 as a player, although the door is also not complete closed, and his career will now hinge on his return from Achilles surgery.

The injury cost Beckham a playing place at this summer's World Cup finals and he had to make do with a position in Capello's backroom staff, but the 35-year-old has no immediate plans to take up a permanent international coaching role.

Step down

He joked to Sky Sports News when questioned on the subject: "I wouldn't put any money on that.

"The manager has been in charge for a few years now and he obviously feels that it is the right time to step down in a couple of years.

"And hopefully he ends by winning the European Championship."

Beckham watched as England made it two wins out of two in Euro 2012 qualifying with a comfortable victory in Switzerland on Tuesday night to follow the thrashing of Bulgaria at Wembley last Friday.

However, the match in Basel was overshadowed by weekend newspaper allegations surrounding the private life of Rooney, which plunged the striker under intense scrutiny and it was questioned whether he should play.

Personality

The 24-year-old responded with the opening goal in a 3-1 win and Beckham is also confident that his compatriot will receive all the neccesary support from club side United and manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Beckham, who spent part of his youth career at Old Trafford before turning professional in 1993 and moving to Madrid 10 years later, said: "He is definitely at the right team and has the right manager to be able to cope with any situation.

"I know that from my personal experience of being at Manchester United for so many years.

"It is a club and a team that puts their arms around you, looks after you and supports you, so he has got that.

"The performance of the whole team was great because when certain situations happen around the team, or with individuals, it can affect the team.

"I think the team came together, players came together, and Wayne performing like he did shows his personality.

"Anything that goes on outside of the game, I'm not interested in. I'm more focused on if England can get a result and they did and that was the most important thing."
