Tiote was shown a straight red card on Saturday by referee Andre Marriner for a lunge on Stevenage defender Jon Ashton as the League Two newcomers won 3-1 to dump Toon out of the FA Cup.

Nolan claims that Ashton admitted after the game that it was a fair tackle, but although Tiote appealed, the FA ruled the sending off would stand.

The Ivory Coast international must therefore still serve a three-match ban, ruling him out of Newcastle's Premier League games against Sunderland, Tottenham and Fulham.

The 24-year-old holding midfielder has had a big impact at St James' Park since his summer move from FC Twente and Nolan is angered that Tiote's sending off was upheld.

Not right

"What's the point in having these appeals because there's no way in the world that was a red card," he told Sky Sports.

"We've got to change the system because that is not right.

"He didn't touch the player, the lad's even said he didn't touch him, and I think everyone who's looked at it has agreed it's not a sending-off and it's not a red card, so how has he still got a three-game ban.

"We're going to lose arguably one of our best players of the season, if not the best player of our season, because of a mistake by a referee."
