England boss Fabio Capello has revealed he has spoken to Andy Carroll to warn him about the dangers of drinking too much beer.

Liverpool striker Carroll, who will start Tuesday's friendly against Ghana, found himself caught up in a number off-the-field alcohol-fuelled incidents while at Newcastle.

Capello is a big admirer of Carroll and he believes he must take care of himself off the pitch if he wants to improve as a player.

"Carroll is a player, who's really good in the air, but not only this," said Capello. "The movement when he receives the ball is good. With the ball. He's strong. He's a good player. He's a good forward.

"Look, he's young. Really young. His behaviour now is really, really important. Really important. He needs to be careful at every moment.

"When you play with the England national team, at every moment you are the focus of the fans, the newspapers, the photographers, the people that live around him.

"I spoke with him privately. I think not only Andy likes to drink beer. Not only Andy. He needs to improve, to drink less."

No deal

Capello also insists there has been no deal struck with Liverpool over how long Carroll will play for against Ghana.

Reds boss Kenny Dalglish hinted that he would prefer Carroll not to be involved at all after only recently recovering from a long-term thigh problem.

However, Capello feels Carroll is capable of starting against Ghana and that his involvement will only help him in his bid for fitness.

"Absolutely no-one has rung me and we have not spoken with Liverpool," added Capello.

"He needs to play. Liverpool will be happy for him to play. It is a friendly and he can play up to half-time, or more. For this reason, the game is important for him and for me."

Jack Wilshere has also found himself involved in some off-the-field scrapes, but Capello believes Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is the right man to keep the young midfielder on the right track.

"I think the teacher of Wilshere is really good," added Capello. "Wenger will be a good teacher for him. It's better for him to speak with him."

Yet another private conversation bought out to the media eh Capello, this type of conversation should of stayed behind closed doors- it seems MR CAPELLO likes to use players to further his career as a good manager ha! Regard to Liverpool contacting England, they have and made it clear that Carroll is not fit enough to play and they would prefer if England didn't play him for long if at all! It seems like the club purchase the players and England run them into the ground! I think clubs should be able to claim compensation if a player is injured while on England duty if the are a, carrying a injury or b, not fit enough to play in the 1st place- especially at this important time of year! Playing for England while not fit for 'friendlies'! Im club before country 100% Capello putting England down sooner he goes the better for English football!

Having a quiet word with young players to keep them on the straight and narrow = good management. Announcing it to the press = awful management. Yet again Capello demonstrates a criminally eccentric approach to PR. I don't see any benefit in putting young egos under the media spotlight like this - they're more likely to rebel than toe the line.

Just a quick point, if, as Capello says, he spoke privately with Andy about this issue, why had he come out and said it to the media and make it PUBLIC!!!!! Anyone get the feeling that he wont be having a private conversation with anyone again!

For once, I agree with Capello. This is Carroll's big chance, and he mustn't waste it by living the wrong lifestyle. I'm sure that the 'old heads' at Liverpool, such as Carra and Stevie G, will help and advise him as well as the backroom staff. Carroll has the whole football world in front of him, and a great deal of responsibility on his shoulders - he has to behave like a professional. He should look at someone like Thierry Henry's career and achievements, and learn from the lifestyle example he set.
