Hearts have confirmed former Sporting Lisbon manager Paulo Sergio as the man to replace the departed Jim Jefferies.

Jefferies was dismissed on Monday, along with assistant Billy Brown, after failing to guide the team to a league win since March.

In a club statement, Hearts confirmed: "Jim was offered the chance to step up to director of football at Tynecastle but turned down the position."

Paulo Sergio, 43, is his immediate replacement, and will hold his first press conference on Tuesday after taking a first glimpse at the squad he has inherited.

The Portuguese manager has been coaching since 2003 but was dismissed from Sporting earlier this year following a poor sequence of results, including a Europa League exit to Rangers.
