Gunter: Previous winner
A star of the future could soon be recognised following the announcement of the short list for the Championship's Young Apprentice of the Season awards.
The Wickes Young Apprentice Trophy 2008 will be awarded to the best young talent in the Championship this year.
This year's short list is comprised of defenders Anthony Acheampong and Mark Beevers, of Cardiff and Sheffield Wednesday respectively, and Barnsley's Mark Devonshire.
Crystal Palace defender Lee Hills, Ipswich stopper Tommy Smith and Leicester midfielder Joe Mattock complete the list.
Tottenham's Chris Gunter, formerly of Cardiff, lifted last year's award after starring for the Bluebirds and the defender has since gone on to receive a call-up to the full Wales team.
This year's nominees will hope to follow in the footsteps of Gunter when the short list is analysed by a panel including former Aston Villa midfielder Andy Townsend and members of the Professional Football Association.
And Wickes' sports sponsorship manager Matt Holmes recognises the intense competition between this year's candidates.
"Last year's winner Chris Gunter and his recent achievements are a shining example to other players at this stage of their career in terms of what can be achieved," said Holmes.
"The short list this year is extremely strong and we wish all of the players involved successful careers in the future."
The winning player will receive £5,000 for his club's youth development programme and holiday vouchers. The club of the second placed player will win £3,000 and the third will be given £2,000.
