Fabio Capello has named David Beckham in his provisional England squad for the friendly with France. Is he right to recall the former captain for what would be his 100th cap?
Has David Beckham done enough to earn his recall - and century - or should Capello call time on his international career?
What about the return of Theo Walcott? Is the Arsenal youngster ready to make an impact on the international stage?
Middlesbrough's David Wheater is also an inclusion. Have you been impressed by the young defender's form?
Who do you think will miss out when the squad is trimmed to 23?

Gregory Monk (Blackburn Rovers fan) says...
Something as serious as international football shouldn't be affected by sentiment. One criticism of the recent English teams is that they have not had a true leader in the form of management to guide the team to success. There has been too much player power and many people have accepted that. Why then should we waste rebuilding time in this friendly by giving a man with no international future a run out of longer than 5 minutes? He has been a credit to his nation but its now time to move on. Let him play in the friendly in the last few minutes if it shuts up all the people who feel he 'deserves' his 100th cap, but then it's time to start taking this nations national side seriously, starting with a regular place for David Bentley and David James.

Its simple Beckham has never played for England for his own success or gain, but instead has always played for the badge on the shirt! Perhaps the rest of the team should take note on wednesday to see how playing for England is really done!

Will Cox says...
If you actually look at the previous england games, especially against switzerland, there is not a single player on the squad that put as much effort in as Beckham. So what if he went to LA, at least when he plays for England he puts his all in and actually sings the NATIONAL ANTHEM!

Steve M (Norwich City fan) says...
David Beckham is still by far the most important player England have. This was never more evident than the euro qualifiers, when England looked a less than average side until Beckhams recall. We looked like a team with no leadership, no attacking flair and very little drive. On his recall Beckham brought all these back into the side and we began to look like a team that against all the odds may just qualify. He was left on the bench for the final game against Croatia and by the time of his arrival on the pitch it was too late. Yet Beckham again so nearly single handedly turned the game around. So for all these reasons not only would I recall David Beckham, I would also make him my long term captain. Not only is he Englands most influential player but he is also Englands most natural leader, someone that all the younger players can learn from and look up to.

Paul Burton says...
Beckham is England's past, he may have given the past team something special with his unique skill but England never achieved at the highest level. Face the fact that choosing a player for sentimental reasons deprives a new talent a chance. We need to build for the future not hark back to a bunch of under-acheivers. To please the 100 cap club bring him on for injury time, then wave goodbye to the past and welcome the new (hopefully) succesful England team, without Becks

I am really looking forward to see the hero who is David Beckham's back to the England national team. He deserves to get his 100th cap with his brightly career, because he has done enough contribution to his country.

Anyone who thinks Becks doesn't deserve this re call cant call themselves a fan of english football, he has given so much to the team, the fans, his clubs and his country and consistently proven himself when others would have given up, well done Capello, good luck Becks and come on England!!

Yes Becks should get a run in the team, he deserves his chance! Everything that has happened to engalnd lately has come from him! he is one of the legends of english football and it shouldnt even be a question if he deserves his 100th cap! it goes without saying that he deserves it more than anyone, he has captained the side and lead us through thick and thin! know one deserves this more than him!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Capello needs to keep his new employers happy....DB picked purely so that Capello can get this over with and get on with rebuilding ( ...the reason for him being given the job.... ) and after all it is only a friendly....

Dave New (Liverpool fan) says...
Beckham went "Hollywood" when he elected to move to the USA over competitive Euro football. He has spent more time gathering splinters while warming the bench than he has playing football. Why would any serious manager planning for the future bring out an old has been for this game?

Scott Ansell says...
I think he's right to recall Beckham to the squad. First of all Becks deserves to join the century club for all the effort he has put in to England over the past decade or so. Does everyone so easily forget the match against Greece where he almost single-handedly dragged the team into the World Cup Finals? Yes he is too old now to go to the next World Cup and play, but with his experience and passion he needs to remain involved with the England set-up in some capacity. He has a mature head and attitude now and he has been there, done that, and his experience is invaluable to what will be an emerging England team. Reward him with his century and show that England not only expects, it also gives back.

He's been picked just to get his 100th cap which he deserves. Then after that i'm sure you'll see him retire from international football and that will be the end of this circus !!!!!

I believe Beckham should not be included at all.As far as I am concerned, a friendly should be used to look at some younger players, and players on the fringe of being capped. Why should Beckham be capped because he is at 99 caps ? What message does that send out to all of the other players ?,,those who stay and play in England, instead of camera hunting in the U.S. ..Mr Beckham is driven by the "great I am" syndrome.and for that reason alone I say,,,FORGET HIM !!!

"Downing and co"...what a fantastically accurately way to highlight how incredibly stupid some football fans in this country have become. Only we could single out a player to the extent that they no longer feel comfortable playing for the national side. Yes...I'm a Boro fan, but his performances of late have earned him his call up. He's scored 7 goals this season and created plenty as well, Capello named 11 midfielders in his squad, if there are 11 English midfielders with better records than that then name them, otherwise have a think before opting for a fashionable dig at someone who represents or country. No-ones pretending that he is or ever will be on Beckham's level, but he gives England another option and he gives everything he's got

Craig Morley (Newcastle United fan) says...
A case of one step forward, 2 steps back for Capello. He should be preparing a side to win the 2010 World Cup. Beckham will definately not be around for that, he should not be recalled. I also think the same goes for David James, who will also probably not make the cut in 2010. Let's build a side to win the World Cup instead of being emotional and sentimental by letting players (i.e. Beckham) who just don't cut it anymore, back into the team just so that they can win their hundreth cap. MOVE ON Capello... build for the future - Becks is the past!

Its about time he got a call up, deffinatly deserves his 100th cap - capello should give him the captaincy just for this game aswell

Beckham deserves it.England need him.Downing and Co are non starters. They havent been there, seen it and done it.Beckham has done more for English football than a host of other big names that have constantly bottled it time and time again. The likes Gerrard for one,why people rave about him I really dont know,he is a one trick pony that plays one good game and 3 mediocre.hardly the hallmark of a great player.Beckham has the passion, the skill and the desire all great players need.Well done Capello, wise decision.

Mal Edington says...
Becks deserves his hundreth cap because he still is good enough and capello will gain brownie points for doing so. However, what it also shows it that there is still a gap of overall ability if a player who plays in a substandard league to the premiership can get picked. That's the biggest worry for me. However he still is the best dead ball specialist for england, and on that basis, he is worthy to have his 100th cap, and worthy of being granted the 100th cap for the ambassador he has been across the world. He should be given the captaincy for the game, its a friendly, so its not as important as a qualifier, and hopefully we can get gfood resulot against the french.

Can't really come up with a good reason for having Beckham in the squad - surely after the debacle of the 2008 failure these are the chances to get to look at players who are taking over from Beckham - woz never a great fan of his - runs around a lot and crosses a good ball - but I never heard players like Coppell, Summerbee, Trevor Stevens referred to as world class and they could all do what Beckham does and defend!!!

Good to see so many comments in support of a man who's determination to be the best is an inspiration and example many should follow. Graham Taylor once said that success is 5% inspiration and 95% perspiration. Beckham personifies this perfectly. His work ethic is commendable on and off the pitch. To say that he is past his best is ridiculous. Anything he may have lost in speed has been replaced with composure and maturity, a big plus on the world stage. Copello certainly seems to be picking his teams on a weekly form basis meaning the in form players represent England. What could be better? McClaren was wrong to drop him, why would Copello make the same mistake? He is still the best in the world at what he does. I hope he's given the chance to get his well earned 100'th cap.
