Carew: Starred for Villa

On a weekend that saw Chelsea move five points clear at the top of the Premier League and Arsenal continue their incredible scoring spree, there were some surprise names towards the top of the Fantasy Football points table.

There were not too many players who enjoyed hugely profitable games as the goals were shared around by those teams recording emphatic victories, while only two teams managed to keep clean sheets on another bad weekend for defenders.

The eagerly-awaited heavyweight battle at Stamford Bridge may have been going Manchester United's way on points until Chelsea delivered the knockout blow with 14 minutes remaining to secure a 1-0 victory.

John Terry grabbed the goal with a flicked header from Frank Lampard's free-kick and the Blues skipper also walked away with the Man of the Match award after a typically commanding display at centre-back.

Anyone who had the foresight to include Terry in their Fantasy Football team should be congratulated, although his 12-point haul was only good enough to place him joint second on the weekend podium.

The other player to earn a score of 12 was Jason Roberts of Blackburn, quite an achievement considering he started Saturday's match against Portsmouth on the substitutes' bench and only came on at half-time.

Rovers were trailing 1-0 at the interval but Sam Allardyce's tactical changes worked wonders as Roberts inspired a second-half comeback with two goals and also picked up the Man of the Match prize.

Star man

Roberts and Terry were, however, trumped by John Carew after the Norwegian striker produced a superb performance to lead Aston Villa to a convincing 5-1 success at home to Bolton.

Carew grabbed the first of two assists when his header proved too hot for Jussi Jaaskelainen to handle and Ashley Young turned home the rebound, before doubling his tally by shrugging off Gary Cahill and setting up Gabriel Agbonlahor.

The powerful centre-forward then got the goal he deserved with a fine solo effort early in the second half after Bolton had pulled the score back to 2-1, with his contribution adding up to 14 points after also being named Man of the Match.

Arsenal have been tipped to bring up a century of goals this season following a 4-1 win away to Wolves and if they manage to reach such a landmark it is surely worth selecting at least one of their attackers.

Cesc Fabregas would have been the best bet this weekend after picking up eight points for a goal and assist, while the likes of Eduardo, Andrey Arshavin, Robin van Persie and Bacary Sagna also prospered.

The game of the weekend turned out to be at Eastlands where Manchester City were held to a fifth successive draw and Burnley collected their first point away from home following a 3-3 thriller.

Graham Alexander earned eight points for scoring a penalty and getting the Man of the Match award, while Clarets team-mate Steven Fletcher and City winger Shaun Wright-Phillips matched his total after a goal and assist each.

Creditable

Craig Bellamy was another player to find the target for City and the Welshman was one of skysports.com's recommended trio of transfer tips in last week's Fantasy Preview.

Bellamy dropped a point for receiving a yellow card but still emerged with a creditable four points, while another of our chosen men fared even better as Benoit Assou-Ekotto scored five for a clean sheet in Tottenham's 2-0 victory over Sunderland.

Sadly it was not a perfect three out of three for skysports.com with the final member of our trio, Portsmouth midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng, unable to offer much in the 3-1 defeat to Blackburn and also being shown a yellow card.

There were others who performed more poorly than Boateng, with defenders from Wolves and Bolton the worst offenders after conceding four and five goals respectively.

Stoke's Abdoulaye Faye was the only player sent off as players behaved themselves much better than the previous weekend, when nine men were given their marching orders.

Liverpool meet Birmingham on Monday night in the final Premier League match before a two-week international break, and we will be back with more hints and tips when the action returns.
