Houllier: Linked with Newcastle post.
Gerard Houllier has been given the go ahead to succeed Sam Allardyce as Newcastle manager.
The former Liverpool boss, who is currently the French Football Federation's technical director, has emerged as one of the frontrunners for the vacancy at St James' Park in recent days.
And his current employers have confirmed they will not deny him the opportunity to take the job if offered it.
FFF president Jean-Pierre Escalette told the Daily Express: "I would not stand in Gerard's way if there was something else he wanted to do. I am not surprised he gets offers.
"He turned one or two down to rejoin us and they were better financially than we could offer him."
Former Newcastle owner Sir John Hall has publicly stated Houllier would be his preferred choice to step in to the manager's hot seat at St James' Park.
He is now quoted at 6-1 to take the job by some bookmakers while favourite Kevin Keegan is now 2-1.

Personally I think anyone would be mad to want the Newcastle job unless they just want to make a quick buck, work 6 months get sacked take the pay off. However Houllier is a good manager not the best but he¿s the best manager Newcastle could probably get and if he¿s interested they shouldn¿t hang around. Get Houllier on board before the transfer window closes.

Gerard Houllier has the knack of beating Sir Alex and Wenger as well and knows how to change the direction of a game in it's mist. He has always won silverware wherever his managed. If he can't make Newcastle one of the big 4 than know body else can. If his health permits Newcastle will be one of the most feared clubs around he has everything in his arsenal to wake up the sleeping giant. Anyways us fans won't have to worry who's running the club because his ego is as big as Sir Alex, Jose, Wenger so he has the respect already which is a good thing. I bet he'd like to knock Liverpool of their high and mighty perch too and that would be grand to watch. His perfect for Newcastle if we can get him we will not look back. If he wins trophies with us we'll bloody put a statue up of him at St.James Park. Houllier's our man.....

I'd Say Houllier is the best choice. He did good things with an average Liverpool team and took them to 2nd in the league winning a Cup Treble and Super Cup and Charity Shield the season after. He then went to Lyon and won 2 succesive Ligue 1 titles. So Newcastle would be getting a winner. Im sure with Houllier as manager, next season after letting him mould his team they will be firmly in the top half pushing for Europe. Give him the job! If you put Keegan and Shearer in, you will regret it. Mind you, I would love to see Shearer go in and be a disaster... Will his loyal toon fans stick by him? Or hound him like every other manager when things go bad? Im sure thats why Shearer is afraid to step up.

Who in their right mind would want to take a job thats akin to sitting down at a 1 man russian roullette table. Success is not something you can buy in the long term.. it has to be worked and planned for.... but Newcastle doesn't seem to have worked that out yet!!
