Tevez: Will play against Portsmouth

Carlos Tevez is in line to make his Manchester United debut against Portsmouth on Wednesday.

Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed the Argentine should be involved at Fratton Park after Wayne Rooney fractured his foot at the weekend.

Tevez finally completed his protracted move to United from West Ham last week but was not involved against Reading on Sunday.

Ferguson had been looking for Tevez to feature for the first time against Manchester City next weekend following a few more training sessions.

However, Rooney's injury has brought the 23-year-old's debut for the Premier League champions forward slightly.

"I think Carlos will go straight into the team on Wednesday," Ferguson said on Sky Sports News.

"I would have preferred him to have waited until Sunday, the match against City would have given him another few days' training."

Ferguson, who was initially offered Tevez last summer but was put off by the complexities of the deal, is happy to finally have the striker on board.

"It's been a long time but a worthwhile wait for someone as good as that," he said. "We're delighted.

"The most important thing is he's proved himself in the English game.

"The platform was there for him to use and he used it fantastically well and showed what a truly world class player he is."
