Barton: Still not fit
He is a number of games short yet and still trying to catch up on match practice, but he is working very, very hard to get there.
Sam Allardyce on Joey Barton's fitness
Quotes of the week
Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce says Joey Barton will not be rushed back for Monday's clash with Tottenham.
The former Manchester City star is yet to play a competitive match for his new club after he broke his foot in the pre-season.
The 25-year-old, who has played two reserve games and a behind-closed-doors friendly, had hoped to force his way into contention for the Premier League clash with Spurs at St James' Park.
But Allardyce says the best the midfielder can hope for is a place on the bench.
"Joey has got a slight chance of being in the squad at the very best, just on the bench," said Allardyce.
"He is a number of games short yet and still trying to catch up on match practice, but he is working very, very hard to get there."
Allardyce also confirmed that striker Mark Viduka returned to training on Tuesday after missing the 3-2 victory over Everton with a calf strain.
He added: "Mark joined in training, so he is hopefully going to have no reaction to his calf problem."
