Giggs: True ambassador

Manchester United chief executive David Gill admits his contract talks with Ryan Giggs were among the easiest he has ever carried out.

The United winger's current deal was due to expire at the end of this season but following talks with the Premier League champions he has penned a new one-year deal.

The 33-year-old's new contract will keep him at Old Trafford until 2009, extending his first-team career with the Red Devils to an incredible 18 years.

"They were not the most difficult negotiations," Gill told MUTV.

Loyal

"In the modern-day game, someone who is loyal to the club - from junior to

senior ranks - and who has 18 trophies is very important.

"Quite rightly, he is respected through the game - with what he has achieved,

and how he has achieved it.

"Everyone can recognise that he is a true gentleman and a true ambassador for this great game and this great club."

The new deal now means that Giggs, who has played 727 times for United, will almost certainly overhaul Sir Bobby Charlton's record of 759 appearances for the club.
