Wright-Phillips: Solid bond

Shaun Wright-Phillips says Joe Cole has helped his career blossom for both club and country.

Wright-Phillips has established himself as an England regular under Steve McClaren and was on the scoresheet in Saturday's 3-0 Euro 2008 qualifying win over Estonia.

And the Chelsea winger says his relationship with team-mate Cole has been a key factor in helping him cement his place in the national side.

"Joe Cole is an idol for everybody and I am a believer that you can learn off every player you work with. To have someone who has been through it is a plus," Wright-Phillips told the Daily Telegraph.

Tight bond

"Me and Coley are really good friends and chat about all sorts of things. The most important thing is that we enjoy each other's company and there is a tight bond there."

Wright-Phillips, who has replaced the injured David Beckham, admits he is relishing the battle with the former captain for the place on the right of England's midfield.

He added: "Becks is a quality player and has been an important part of the England team for a long time and has always done well.

"I have to make sure that I keep working hard and playing well, and if I continue to play regularly then I will be happy."
