Scholes: Injury woe

Manchester United's Paul Scholes is set to undergo a knee operation on Thursday and is expected to be out of action for three months.

The 32-year-old reported the problem during training prior his side's UEFA Champions League win over Dynamo Kiev last week.

Boss Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed on Friday a first scan proved inconclusive - but a second examination on Monday has confirmed ligament damage, meaning Scholes will now be out of action until February.

The midfielder's absence will come as a major blow to Ferguson, who has only just been boosted by the return of summer signing Owen Hargreaves.

A club spokesperson told the club's official website: "We can confirm that Paul Scholes has suffered a knee ligament injury. He will undergo an operation on Thursday and will be out for approximately 12 weeks."
