Rooney: A great honour

Wayne Rooney has been named Premier League Player of the Month for October, while Mark Hughes has won the manager's award.

Manchester United striker Rooney was in superb form throughout last month, scoring four goal in three matches.

He found the target against Middlesbrough and Wigan and netted a brace against Aston Villa, while his sparkling play helped United score four goals in each match.

"It is a great honour but I wouldn't have been able to pick it up without my team-mates so I'd like to thank my team-mates," Rooney, who also scored twice in the UEFA Champions League, told Sky Sports News.

"It's been a good month. We've won a lot of games and I've scored a few goals so it's been a good month both for the club and personally.

"Hopefully I can pick a few more of these awards up towards the end of the season and that will help us to win trophies."

Hughes takes the manager's prize for the first time after leading Blackburn to three consecutive victories against Birmingham, Reading and Tottenham.

He becomes the first Rovers boss to win the award since Brian Kidd in 1998.

Rovers have only been beaten once in the league this season and are currently sixth in the table.
