Sunderland captain Nyron Nosworthy faces a spell on the sidelines after picking up an injury in the Wear-Tyne derby with Newcastle.

Nosworthy was forced to limp off in the first half after appearing to suffer a hamstring problem.

Sunderland boss Roy Keane expects to lose the big defender for a number of weeks with the injury.

The news was a blow for Keane after seeing Carlos Edwards make a successful return from injury in 2-2 draw with Newcastle.

Out for a while

"Carlos has been training for a couple of weeks," Keane told the club's official website.

"I spoke to him and he felt up for the game. I'm sure he can be a bit sharper but he still gives us that threat and pace and he does get wide, we saw the benefits of that.

"It was a gamble [playing Edwards] but that's life, you have to take risks from time to time. He seems alright but then Nyron will be out for a while with his hamstring."
