Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed he would be delighted to see Liverpool relegated.

The bitter North West rivals go head-to-head at Anfield as part of Grand Slam Sunday, which can be seen live on Sky Sports 1, and Ferguson has increased the tension between the sides.

Liverpool have been billed as genuine contenders to United's Premier League crown this season as The Reds are currently six points behind the champions, who sit one point adrift of league leaders Arsenal, with a game in hand.

However, Ferguson has insisted he would rather see United's Merseyside foes, who last won the title in 1990, relegated than witness them sample league success.

Desperate

"You must be joking," said Ferguson when asked in The People if he would welcome the sight of Liverpool ending an almost 20-year wait for top flight glory.

"Do I look as if I'm a masochist ready to cut myself? How does relegation sound instead?

"I enjoy winning at Anfield more than anywhere else. It's a historical thing and although Liverpool may be desperate to beat us we are desperate to win too, it's not a one way street this.

"Historically and geographically we are the two most successful clubs in this country, so really, what do you expect?"
