Manchester United club captain Gary Neville completed 45 minutes of action and scored as the Red Devils' reserves drew 2-2 with Everton.

The 32-year-old defender has not made a first-team appearance since March after picking up an ankle injury during his side's 4-1 win over Bolton at Old Trafford.

His return to fitness has come as a timely boost for Sir Alex Ferguson's side as they look to successfully retain their Premier League title.

Speculation

Neville will also be hoping to prove his fitness to new England boss Fabio Capello.

The Italian takes charge of his first competitive fixture next month - and Neville will be keen to prove his worth in time for the clash with Switzerland.

Neville's return to action could also lead to further speculation over the future of stand-in right-back Wes Brown.

After rejecting the club's latest contract offer Brown could leave United in the January transfer window and the return of Neville would ease the blow for the Old Trafford side.
