Keegan: Newcastle return
Kevin Keegan is sensationally returning to Newcastle United as manager, the club have confirmed.
Keegan enjoyed great success in his first stint at St James' Park between 1992 and 1997, leading the club back into the Premier League and taking them to the brink of the title.
The former England manager became a favourite with the Toon Army during his Magpies playing career and continues to be held in the highest regard on Tyneside.
Keegan has been out of football after leaving his post as Manchester City boss in 2005, but has been tempted back by the challenge of again leading a club he clearly holds close to his heart.
A brief statement on the club's official website read: "Kevin Keegan is returning to Newcastle United as manager."
The Magpies have been searching for a new manager following the departure of Sam Allardyce last week, whose reign lasted for just 24 games.
Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp was initally strongly linked with the post, but he elected to turn the opportunity down to stay on at Fratton Park.
And Keegan has now been handed the task of again making the club Premier League title challengers under new owner Mike Ashley.
Newcastle supporter Ashley took over in the summer, shortly after the appointment of Allardyce by previous chairman Freddy Shepherd, and has since admitted he should have brought in his own man immediately.
Keegan inherits a side 11th in the table, on a run of four successive defeats and still suffering from the defensive problems which have been their Achilles heel for all of the Premier League era.
He is likely to be given funds to strengthen the side during the January transfer window, with a busy time expected in the North East.
Keegan's first game at the helm will be the home Premier League clash against Bolton Wanderers on Saturday, with a testing trip to Emirates Stadium to tackle Arsenal to follow.
Keegan's return had an instant effect as kick-off in Wednesday night's FA Cup third-round replay with Stoke was delayed by 15 minutes.
Security chiefs at St James' Park took the decision to put the start back to 8pm as thousands of fans reacted to news of Keegan's appointment by flocking to the stadium to buy tickets for the game.
And the man himself arrived at the ground midway through the first half, accompanied by Ashley and chairman Chris Mort.
The trio took their seats in the directors' box with Keegan being greeted warmly by everyone in the vicinity.

The king may have returned but i cant see his appointment changing the results or fortunes of Newcastle. Keegan has proved throughout his management carreer that his is tactically naive which when combined with Newcastles poor players is a disaster waiting to happen. Keegan has also proved that when the going gets tough he isnt one to stick around. I think this appointment is all about Ashley appeasing the fans and not about what is best for Newcastle. I just cant see Keegan breaking them into the top four in the near future.

I am delighted and yet reserved. Keegan did wonders before, however there have been problems too e.g. abandonment of the reserve team during his first stint. The club definitely has problems deep within. As over the years the same problems keep re-occurring e.g. ongoing injuries to players - who don¿t seem to get better. Defensive frailties and tactically inept in defending/offensive set pieces. (I thought that big Sam would have got this right given time) Then there are the fans expectations one minute we think we'll win the league, and then next minute we want to sack the manager. I just hope the Kegaan does a good job and doesn¿t harm his 'messiah' status. Because that would be sad for a Tyneside hero.

Keegan is a good choice, when Sanchez was sacked I was praying he would return to the cottage, but the fact is Sam was not given enough time. He took around 8 years to build Bolton yet he dosent even get 8 months at Newcastle. The defenders he bought are good players they just need time to gel and work together. Plus its not like 11th place is that bad! I mean yes Newcastle want to be challenging for Europe but they gave up that ambition by sacking the great Sir Bobby Robson! I feel Spurs and Newcastle are the 2 main culprits of having unrealistic expectations and the boards of these clubs, I believe, are making constantly poor decisions and are the ones that need replacing.

it is a bad reappointment, Keegan did brilliantly well the last time round. This time round the league is tougher, a lot less quality available in the window with pay extornanate amount having to come out of Ashleys pocket . Kevin's walked away from two top jobs now Newcastke being one, therefore i am sure he will have is parachute Shearer. two things will happen for sure alot of money will be spent, it will be a rollercoster (welcome back Kev)_and it will all end in tear. the Toon are dying for succes should have stuck with Big Sam but despiration breeds bad decision making. Football is not a Biuness but more intrinsic to the human soul

I remember last time keegan was at newcastle he scrapped the reserve team. Cov.City bought darren huckerby for 1m which was a bargain and he was then a great player for cov. Keegan is OK when he is wiining but not good when the going gets tough. Look what he did/didnt do for england

Yes the messiah is back, and yes instant results are needed, and yes a big fat kitty is also needed....but what is'nt needed is chelsea fan's who at the minute have a second rate manager in charge, trying to critisice our choice of manager, crystal palace fans commenting.....why dont they go and try get behind there clubs??? KEEGAN!KEEGAN!KEEGAN!

It's done now, so it's time for the fans and the club to get behind him 100%... Kevin Keegan is a winner, and would not have taken on this job if he wasn't certain he could turn things around. This appointment guarantees the return of the electric atmosphere at St. James' Park, and will also pretty much guarantee the fans get back behind the team (albeit undeserved given the quality of recent performances), which has always been so important for a club like Newcastle United. Even if the flair football is not an instant return for their renewed loyalty, the fans trust King Kev. Watch this space, he will most certainly make the difference over the next 2 to 3 years...

Risky choice to place the task of rescuing a team in free fall in the hands of a man who has been concentrating on his golf for the last 3 years! Good luck Kev.

"Boss, I dont know where im playing!" "Play where you like, just go out there and win it son- enjoy it! Enjoy it! Heart son, play with heart!" One bad result later........ "ive come up short, ive taken the club as far as I can, its time for me to go" actually, I like Keegan, he should scour the world for the next tino asprilla and then play him game after game whether he fits into the team or not. Play where you like son- just do some tricks!

I think the appointment could work out well for Newcastle. Kevin Keegan is a big favourite amongst the Newcastle fans and hopefully they will be patient enough to give him the time to turn Newcastle around and back to the strong side they were under the likes of Bobby Robson.
