Gerrard: In the thick of it

Steven Gerrard believes Liverpool's 1-0 defeat of Everton puts them in pole position to claim fourth spot in the Premier League and the final UEFA Champions League place.

The Liverpool skipper was at the hub of much of Liverpool's best work, albeit in a low-key Merseyside derby that the Anfield outfit dominated for large spells.

Fernando Torres' 21st league goal of a marvellous debut campaign in England separated the two sides, and Gerrard admits he was relieved to steal bragging rights in the 207th Merseyside derby at Anfield.

"It was a big win and we knew how important this game would be for us," Gerrard told Sky Sports 1.

"Hopefully now we can continue to pick up wins until the end of the season and grab that fourth spot.

"Credit to Everton they came back strongly in the second half - we couldn't quite get that second goal which made it harder.

"But we are winning games and you're happy as long as you are winning. These games are also about bragging rights and I'm sure the supporters will be pleased.

"We still have difficult games to go so it was important to get the result today."
