Portsmouth striker Jermain Defoe has revealed his troubles at Tottenham left an emotional wreck.

Defoe endured a difficult spell at Tottenham earlier this season as he struggled to earn a regular place in the starting XI.

The England international left Spurs for Portsmouth in the January transfer window and Defoe has blossomed at Fratton Park scoring eight goals in seven games for his new club.

Defoe is enjoying his new lease of life at Pompey admitting he used to cry over his failure to be playing on a regular basis at Tottenham.

Crying

"There were times after games when I would sit in my car and have to stop myself from crying as I was driving home," Defoe told The Sun.

"As a footballer you just want to play football. You can't understand why no one's come up to you with an explanation - even though I was playing in games the team won.

"I believe if I play every week, I will score every week."
