Sir Alex Ferguson believes Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has the ability to emulate Paolo Maldini and carry on playing into his forties.

The 29-year-old has recently agreed a fresh deal that keeps him at Old Trafford until the summer 0f 2013, although Ferguson does not think it will be his last Red Devils contract.

Milan legend Paolo Maldini has recently agreed a fresh contract with the Serie A giants that will see him start next season at the age of 40.

Ferguson does not believe Ferdinand will slow down in his thirties as he thinks his athleticism and pace will allow him to play on, if he chooses to do so.
