United boss backs current squad for greatness

Sir Alex Ferguson believes his current crop of youngsters have the ability to etch their names in Manchester United history.

The Red Devils picked up a 10th Premier League title on Sunday and now have UEFA Champions League glory firmly in their sights.

Ferguson has been fortunate enough to have taken charge of some great players during his 22 years at Old Trafford, but feels that the class of 2008 could outshine them all.

They stand on the brink of a domestic and European double and their manager is adamant that were they to achieve that goal then they would rightfully sit alongside the legendary 1999 treble-winning side.

"If we win the European Cup I think you would have to put this group of players right at the very top of those I have worked with," Ferguson said.

Developing

"It is an emerging team. Normally, the average age of teams who win the European Cup is about 29.

"We have a lot of young players. (Wayne) Rooney, (Cristiano) Ronaldo, (Carlos) Tevez, Anderson, Nani, (Darren) Fletcher.

"Anderson could play in front of a million people and not be bothered one bit. It is that Brazil mentality.

"They are all young players and are getting better.

"But you also need experienced players like Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Edwin van der Sar.

"That kind of experience allows young players to develop. The future is bright and we are all looking forward to Moscow."

Progress

United claimed the Premier League crown with a 2-0 victory away at Wigan, a result which saw them finish two points clear of nearest challengers Chelsea.

However, Ferguson is refusing to rest on his laurels and expects the rest of the Premier League to be doing their utmost to ensure that United do not get their hands on a third straight championship next season.

"I expect Arsenal to be very strong and Liverpool to buy a lot of players," he said.

"I do not know what Chelsea will do as they already have a strong squad.

"Everton are continuing to progress under David Moyes and Tottenham will have a much bigger say, I am sure.

"I cannot say we are going to dominate again as it would be stupid to do that."
