Liverpool have confirmed the appointment of Sammy Lee as Rafa Benitez's assistant manager at Anfield.

Lee returns for a third spell at Liverpool to replace coach Alex Miller, who quit the club in the summer to take charge of Japanese outfit JEF United.

During his playing days, Lee helped Liverpool secure three League titles, four League Cups and two European Cups before he moved to QPR in 1986.

Lee worked as part of Liverpool's coaching staff under the tenures of Graeme Souness, Roy Evans and Gerard Houllier.

Upon Benitez's arrival on Merseyside, Lee left his post to take up a full-time position with the England national side.

An ill-fated spell as Bolton boss ended earlier in this season, when he was dismissed despite having been at the helm for just six months.
