Michael Carrick has signed a new four-year contract with Manchester United.

The midfielder moved to Old Trafford from Tottenham for a fee of £18.6million in the summer of 2006.

He followed up an impressive first season with an exceptional second, helping United to retain their Premier League title and advance to the final of the UEFA Champions League.

Carrick was a regular starter throughout the campaign and is likely to feature in Moscow against Chelsea on Wednesday, a match which can be seen live on Sky Sports 1.

Delight

Sir Alex Ferguson has already tied defender Rio Ferdinand to a long-term deal in the last week and has now convinced Carrick to stay until at least 2012.

"I am delighted Michael has signed a new contract," said Ferguson.

"Michael has been outstanding since joining us from Tottenham and it is great to know he will be a part of this squad for many years to come."

Carlos Tevez and Patrice Evra could also be handed new contracts in the near future.
