Former Sunderland goalkeeper and academy coach Tim Carter has been found dead.

The 40-year-old was reported missing from his Durham home early on Thursday morning and his body was discovered in bushes by a passer-by in Manchester just after noon on the same day.

Reports have claimed that he was found with rope around his neck and is believed to have hanged himself.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: "Shortly after 12pm on Thursday, June 19, police were called to Highfield Close, in Stretford, following reports of a body found.

"Officers attended and found the body of a 40-year-old man.

"There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances."

Academy

Football coach Carter had been recently appointed as Sunderland's academy goalkeeping coach after 50 appearances for the Black Cats from 1987-1992.

He remained the first-team keeper coach before ex-Manchester United shot-stopper Raimond Van Der Gouw arrived last summer.

Carter was capped three times with England's youth squad in 1985 and made his football league debut with Bristol Rovers at the age of 18.

Carter played for a string of clubs including Newport, Carlisle, Birmingham, Hartlepool, Millwall, Blackpool and Oxford before ending his playing days at Halifax Town in 1999 and going into coaching.

During his career he was also Estonia's national team goalkeeping coach on a part-time basis after being recommended by ex-Sunderland No.1 Mart Poom.

A spokesman for Sunderland has declined to comment.
