Chelsea offered Claudio Pizarro to River Plate ahead of the new South American season, according to the Argentinean club's president.

River president Jose Maria Aguilar claims he was informed that Pizarro - who is a target of Real Betis - was available prior to the beginning of the fresh campaign.

Pizarro has failed to impress at Stamford Bridge after moving to England on a free transfer from Bayern Munich in 2007 and it is understood Chelsea are looking to offload the Peru international striker.

However, Aguilar says River would have been unable to meet Pizarro's wage demands, reported to be in the region of £2.5million-per-year.

"We have had an informal chat only. We are offered a hundred players," said Aguilar.

"Pizarro is a first-class footballer who plays at one of the most powerful, most important clubs in the world.

"Right now, there is no real chance (to sign Pizarro)."
