Chelsea are close to agreeing a deal to sign Brazil international Mineiro on a free transfer.

The Blues have lined up a move for the free agent as they seek a replacement for the injured Michael Essien.

Chelsea had been considering a move for another out-of-contract midfielder - Stephen Appiah - but they have opted to go for Mineiro.

The 33-year-old has been without a club since leaving Hertha Berlin at the end of last season.

Arsenal took Mineiro on trial earlier this month, while Birmingham have also been credited with an interest in the defensive midfielder.

However, Chelsea have won the race to sign the former Sao Paulo man with Luiz Felipe Scolari thought to be an admirer of his qualities.

Scolari's assistant, Flavio Murtosa, has revealed Mineiro is on the brink of a move to Stamford Bridge.

"We have practically completed the recruitment of Mineiro," Murtosa told Radio Bandeirantes.

"He was available, out of contract with the German club, and at this time we had the chance to hire him and satisfy our need [for a new midfielder]."
