Guthrie: Club commitment
Danny Guthrie admits he would relish an England Under-21 call-up - but for now is committed to turning around Newcastle's fortunes.
The 21-year-old has caught the attention of U21 boss Stuart Pearce after joining the Magpies in a £2.5million move from Liverpool in the summer.
Although Guthrie was not named in the squad for the two-legged play-off against Wales, he could be selected if England make it to next summer's U21 European Championship.
However, the tenacious midfielder, who has just returned from a three-match ban, insists getting Newcastle back on track is his top priority.
"Like any young player, I want to get into the squad, and if I can maintain my performance levels for Newcastle, then I might get a chance," said Guthrie.
"It is an aim, but I am not too worried about it at the moment. If Stuart Pearce picks me, he picks me, but if not, I will just concentrate on playing for Newcastle.
"Newcastle's the most important thing for me. I want to play for the team here more than anything, and if I get picked for the Under-21s, that will be an added bonus."
