Man City executive chairman Garry Cook believes the club are going in the right direction and the future is bright at Eastlands.

His comments come as Mark Hughes is expected to spend big in the January transfer window with the financial muscle of new owners the Abu Dhabi United Group at his disposal.

The City boss will travel to Abu Dhabi next month to discuss transfer targets and Cook believes he will recruit wisely.

But the executive chairman has asked City fans to have patience as the club builds for the long term.

Surprised

He told the Manchester Evening News: "We've come a long way in a short space of time, and people are forgetting that. We've surprised people, and we will continue to surprise people.

"But it will happen over the long term. It's not about last Sunday's result, or the result against Newcastle a week on Monday.

"Of course, everybody wants to win their next match, but we're talking about Manchester City's long-term impact.

"We remain very confident about what's ahead of us. We always wanted to bring in the right partners to create a perfect setup.

"We got the manager we wanted, along with the right coaching staff. And we knew we had great admin staff.

"But we knew we needed resources on the field as well. And that was all about bringing in the right partner. We have a benefactor who understands the needs of all those parties.

Huge buzz

"If you bring all these elements together - and it has happened as much by luck as by design - it creates a huge buzz.

"And there's a buzz here now that we haven't seen for years."

Cook said the future on the field is bright.

"Mark talks about moving this club forward. I can't think of anybody better to take us there," he said.

"He knows what the job involves. If we give Mark the resources, he will deliver for us.

"But he is working with a squad he largely inherited."
