Sky Sports News understands that Cardiff are closing in on the loan signing of Wayne Routledge from Aston Villa.

The winger has made just one substitute appearance for the Villans in the Premier League this season.

His failure to win a place in Martin O'Neill's plans has persuaded him that a spell with the Bluebirds will provide him with the opportunity to play regular first-team football.

The former England Under 21 international has made little impact at Villa Park since completing a switch from Tottenham in January and will welcome the prospect of taking on a new challenge.

His forthcoming stint at Ninian Park will represent the third loan spell of his career, having worked under similar arrangements at Portsmouth and Fulham in the past.
