Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton is on target to make his comeback in January.

Barton is currently sidelined with a knee ligament injury he sustained in last month's draw with Wigan.

The former Manchester City man is making good progress with the injury and Magpies boss Joe Kinnear is hopeful Barton will be back in action in the New Year.

"We have just had Joey's injury re-assessed and the doctor and physio team tell me we cane expect to have him back in the middle of January," Kinnear told the club's official website.

"And now he has a date to aim for, it will give Joey a big lift."
