Chelsea manager Guus Hiddink has played down fresh reports that he is set to walk away from his role as Russia boss in order to take up a permanent position at Stamford Bridge.

The Dutchman arrived in England in mid-February when answering a distress call from Blues owner Roman Abramovich as the Russian billionaire, who enjoys a friendship with Hiddink, sought a replacement for the sacked Luiz Felipe Scolari.

Former Australia, South Korea and Holland boss Hiddink opted to help Abramovich by agreeing to steady the Chelsea ship on a temporary basis until the end of the season, but he insisted on also remaining in charge of Russia.

Speculation has persistently implied that Abramovich will seek to secure Hiddink's services beyond the summer, with recent rumours suggesting Dick Advocaat was being lined up as a replacement at international level.

But Hiddink has dismissed the rumours, saying: "If there is something new I will announce it.

"There is nothing new. It is not an everyday issue and we stick to what we have said recently.

"I have settled in quickly. But I knew a bit of Premier League, English football and this club, and I am the kind of person who tries to adapt as soon as possible.

"This is high-level football and we have to keep up with the demands for this. I was very well received and have been backed up by all the departments assisting the first team.

"I am also very happy with the contribution of (assistant) Ray Wilkins."

Meanwhile, Hiddink has been boosted by the recovery of long-term injury victim Michael Essien.

The Ghana international, out for six months with knee ligament damage, is to play against Aston Villa in the reserves next week.

"He is developing very well and working hard," said Hiddink. "He has a good attitude and an open guy.

"We worked with him in some tough five and eight-a-side games and we plan to play him in the reserves at Aston Villa on Monday."
