Luke Young believes Aston Villa will only have themselves to blame if they do not qualify for the UEFA Champions League at the end of the season.

Villa are currently in fourth place, only three points ahead of Arsenal, and face a tough run-in that includes matches with Liverpool and Manchester United.

But right-back Young still thinks his side have the situation firmly under control.

"We are aware of the situation and the games that are to come. If we don't finish fourth it will be down to ourselves," he said.

"We don't need to worry about others because it is down to us. When you look at it, destiny is in our own hands with a quarter of the season to go.

"We would have taken this. We just have to keep focused on what we need to do now. There are 10 games to go. That is like a mini-season for us and we will be up for the challenge."

Martin O'Neill's team have taken only one point from their last three Premier League games, losing to Chelsea and Manchester City while only managing a draw with struggling Stoke.

However, Young is looking on the bright side, pointing out that Villa would have gladly accepted their current position at the start of the season.

"If anyone would have asked whether we would have taken the number of points we have at this stage, and the position in the table, we would have snapped their hands off," the 29-year-old added.

"That's no consolation for the last two games and I accept that - but we know what we have to do now and it is all in our hands."

He believes that a mini-break spent in Dubai has reinvigorated the squad after a string of fixtures had left them burnt-out.

He said: "It's been a long season and, for me personally, it was good not having a game for a few days because the last couple of weeks has been a game every three days.

"I think it will have done us good having a bit of a break and hopefully we will start putting in performances like we did earlier in the season."
