Quotes of the week
Newcastle United have suspended midfielder Joey Barton until further notice.
The 26-year-old was sent off for the fourth time in his career in the Magpies' 3-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.
Manager Alan Shearer entrusted the former Manchester City man to cope with the pressure on Merseyside, but was left fuming after Barton was dismissed for a reckless challenge on Xabi Alonso.
Newcastle have not divulged the reasons behind Barton's suspension, although it is believed to stem from an alleged bust-up between Shearer and the midfielder in the aftermath of the defeat.
Sky Sports News understands that Barton's suspension is not directly linked to his dismissal for his tackle on Alonso, but for his apparent clash with Shearer.
This latest move by Newcastle could well end Barton's career on Tyneside after he was backed by the club following his release from prison last summer.
"Newcastle United can confirm that Joey Barton has been suspended from the club until further notice," read a statement on the club's official website.
"The club will be making no further comment on the matter at this time."

This may be the only time in my life i see eye to eye with an Ipswich Town fan, absolutely this guy is a disgrace and i find it hard to understand why do the paying public continue to watch as the game falls into disrepute. The beautifull game could do with a shot of discipline. If Joey did indeed assault Shearer why not loan Joey to a lower league team and make him earn his way back. It's disgusting to watch these type of charecters continue to play.

Any intelligent punishment for Joey Barton would surely see the end of his career in football, for the sake of other players in the Premiership, and at Newcastle. His actions in the past, plus this new episode of stupidity certainly pay no fine example to young people either. Unfortunately, the most easily predictable outcome of this whole scenario would see Joey Barton move on the cheap to another lower level Premiership club in the summer, and like most people, I too am 100% sure that this will be the case. In my opinion, Barton should be kicked out of professional football...for good.

I can't believe that Barton is still allowed to play in the Premier League. He consistantly refuses to respect fellow professionals and will eventually end somebody's career. He needs a lifetime ban.

I like to try and be eloquent when commenting on these things, but why waste words on a guy like Barton?! He's a thug. It really is that simple. Stick him in an army training camp and then we'll see who the hard man really is, eh Joey.

Joey is one talented footballer but he has been very unlucky with us, in 2 years he has either been injured, suspended or in jail which I think is a shame, Personally I feel Joey is a legend but NUFC will sell him in the summer come what may to the club. Sadly I feel we will only get around 3 mil for him which is a rip off as we have spent between 9 and 10mil on him on his wages and transfer fee.

As a lifelong Newcastle fan I can honestly say I feel that relegation is probably the best thing for us (hurts i know). That way we can hopefully reinvent ourselves. We will not be able to afford the likes of Barton (even if we did want to keep him which we dont) and various other waste of timers. It would be very sobering (not often heard in the Toon). Maybe when we are at it we can get rid of Ashley who has managed to put us here in the first place?

All I can say about him is that he is a disgrace and has been offered so many chances and still does not learn from his mistakes. There is no place for him in football.

I'd actually like him to play again¿ just so that someone can kick lumps out of him and then put him out the game for good through injury¿ least he deserves really

Barton is a disgrace to football generally. He's just a thug on high wages & has no respect for anyone. Get rid of him

Everyone said that Lee Bowyer and Jonathon Woodgate would never play at the top level again and look what happened there!!! Same with Jermaine Pennant & Diouf! Both of them have been in trouble before! It will be forgotten and Barton will grab himself another chance at another club without doubt! Its shocking but he will! Some newly promoted prem team will take a gamble on him coz they'll get him on the cheap!

Joey Barton should not be allowed near a football stadium let alone be in a team. His record is shocking, the amount of times he's trashed the teams reputation is pathetic. He doesnt have any respect at all for the game and i would happly see him go.

I think Joey Barton needs to have a look at the way he conducts himself on and off the pitch and should take after Eric Cantona. I remember when he was sent off and banned for kicking the Crystal Palace player and then flying kicking the supporter back in the mid 90's. As soon as Cantona took his punishment, ban and also done his community service he came back a changed player and person. Joey Barton seems to be worse the more he is punished/disciplined. Kick him out of the Premier League, he is no role model to youngsters and does not deserve to be able to earn £60k+ a week for going on the way he does.

Christopher Dowding says...
Joey Barton has made a rash tackle and been dealt with by the referee , straight red card & ban. If Alan Shearer has decided to tear a strip off Barton in the dressing room and Barton decides to verbally oppose Shearers comments then there is no problem with that. There is also no problem with fining Barton 2 weeks wages . If Newcastle decide to put him on the transfer list there is no problem which is probably what they should do. Though there can be no legit reason for sacking him unless Barton has again resorted to violence that has thus far been un reported. Although no one can condone Bartons conduct over the years i have no doubt that a premier club will come in for him on a 3/4 year contract.

Shaun Davis (Ipswich Town fan) says...
Why is Joey Barton still playing football? Joey Barton needs football, football does not need Joey Barton. How is this setting a good example to any children watching the game by letting him keep playing? Fair enough giving someone a second chance but Barton has gone well past this now! Surely the FA can get rid of him. He isn't that great a player anyway. Ban him from playing until he sorts out his act or forever! See how his attitudes changes then! Joey Barton is a mindless thug who shouldn't be allowed on a Premiership/Championship/League1&2 pitch again. Get rid and let the game more forward!

What's the odds that, once he is kicked out of Newcastle (which he more than likely will be) that one of the lower level teams in the Premiership try and scoup him up for a drop price?!I think Newcastle should sue him and that the Premier League or FA or whoever, should just simply ban the vile little creature from football. It's disgusting he has had so many chances thus far.Footballers have been given far too much power, it's a joke!

Barton had everything at Man City! He was playing well, scoring goals and got his first England Call up, he threw that all away and its all his own fult! Im glad he left city and if anyone has seen the CCTV footage of him beating up a young lad in Liverpool you would all agree with me when i say he should NEVER play football again!!! Get rid!!

Celtic should sign him . He will have to drop his wage demands and newcastle wont get a penny for him . He would be playing champions league football every year and would be perfect for the rangers games. Perfect solution all round

Can we hope that Barton does not come to Pompey as has been rumoured. No chance. He has had so many chances as other bloggers have said. In a recession like this you need to have some responsibility if earning 60k a week when most fans are on a snip of this. Newcastle are a famous and well supported club and from our Pompey recent experience, going down if needs be can really help sort out your club attitude and player pool. I suggest that should be without Barton who will be better served by some serious medical help outside of the game for a while.

If we are relegated this season (which is looking increasingly likely) at least it means we can get rid of the jokers, idiots and under performers. Barton is very near the top of that list. Roll on next season when we start on a clean slate.
