Birmingham boss Alex McLeish is keen to conclude a deal for Lee Bowyer and bring in further midfield reinforcements.

Bowyer impressed for Blues during a loan spell last season and is now available as a free agent following his release by West Ham.

St Andrews boss McLeish, who has been linked with an audacious move for Patrick Vieira, is confident Bowyer's move will be sealed soon, with further reinforcements to follow.

He told the club's official website: "We believe Lee will rejoin the cause and that we can we add other midfielders - one, possibly two before the season starts."

McLeish has already been busy in the transfer market with the signings of Cristian Benitez, Giovanny Espinoza, Roger Johnson, Scott Dann and Joe Hart, but he has promised there is still more to come and has thanked the club's hierarchy for their investment.

The Scot added: "The board's support has been great up to now - how could I complain about the backing I've had so far?

"There are other things in the pipeline which I wouldn't like to go public on for fear of disappointing the Blues fans. There's plenty of speculation - some accurate - some well wide of the mark.

"We still have players under the microscope.

"We can do international loans too and still have the capacity to do another UK so that's a possibility."
