Robbie Keane made a surprise appearance in midfield as a Tottenham side made up largely of young and fringe players lost 2-0 to South China.

The arrival of Peter Crouch at White Lane has led to speculation about who manager Harry Redknapp envisages as being his first choice strike pairing.

It has been suggested Crouch will predominately be paired with Jermain Defoe, leaving Redknapp with a conundrum as to how he should employ Keane.

The Spurs chief used Sunday's game to experiment with the idea of playing Keane as a central midfielder, as the Irishman appeared for the second half as a replacement for Jermaine Jenas.

"I brought him on as JJ [Jermaine Jenas] had a bit of an injury and I didn't want to push him too far," said Redknapp.

"Robbie came on and he played in there. He is a good player and he can play several positions. He is always enthusiastic and he loves to play wherever he is asked to play."
