South Africa coach Carlos Alberto Parreira believes Benni McCarthy should leave Blackburn Rovers in January.

McCarthy has started just once in the Premier League for Rovers this season, with the striker's style not fitting in to Sam Allardyce's system.

The 32-year-old has revealed he will look to move on in the New Year, with Allardyce admitting he would be prepared to listen to offers for McCarthy.

Portsmouth have been strongly linked with a bid for the front man, whose former clubs Ajax and Porto have also been mooted as admirers.

And, ahead of next summer's World Cup finals in his homeland, McCarthy has been advised to find a new club by his national team coach Parreira.

"I cannot speak on his behalf, but I heard him say that in the January transfer window, he will decide on a new direction in his career maybe to go to a club where he can play because I don't think a player like him would be happy to be in the reserves and not playing and coming to the national team out of shape because of this," said Parreira.

"So, if he wants my advice I think he should look for a club where he can play."

McCarthy started his first game for South Africa since February this year when he featured in Saturday's 0-0 draw with Japan at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Port Elizabeth.
