Steve Bruce has expressed his delight at how quickly Paulo da Silva has settled at Sunderland.

The Paraguay international arrived at the Stadium of Light over the summer as a virtual unknown, but has quickly established cult hero status on Wearside.

A number of commanding performances have endeared him to the Black Cats faithful, with the 29-year-old helping to add steel to Bruce's backline.

He put in another assured showing during Saturday's impressive 1-0 victory over Arsenal, and has drawn high praise from his boss for the impact he has made during his short time at the club.

"Paulo was absolutely tremendous," said Bruce.

"In my experience with all the South Americans, they take time to adapt and adjust and get used to the North East - it takes me long enough!

Outstanding

"But he is an outstanding defender and I thought he was magnificent in his overall performance.

"And the good thing about him is he is never rash, he is calm and a very, very good defender. He was excellent."

The good news for Sunderland supporters is that Da Silva feels there is still more to come from him this term.

Adjusting to new surroundings is never easy, but the South American insists he is slowly getting to grips with life in England.

He said: "I have very little English, but in the game, it is not difficult. 'Man on!' and things like that - for me, that vocabulary is no problem.

"But maybe in two months, I will speak English much better."

we've had some really good buys this summer ...initially bent and cana spring to everyones mind...but by far da silva has been in my eyes the best signing and is an unsung hero....this bloke knows how to defend and does it in such a cool and calm manner that he makes it look easy ......i'm feeling really good about this season and 7 points from the top teams in 4 games proves we are heading in the right direction

Rhys Clark (Sunderland fan) says...

Paulo Da Silva is amazing in my eyes, world class. In the summer i think Bruce could go for Klass Jan Huntelar because he never gets played at AC Milan and maybe try and get Nihat but it will be hard to get him as he is an outstanding player.
