Damien Duff's Fulham team-mates are trying to help him forget his World Cup misery - by mocking his Stade de France tears.

The Republic of Ireland winger was inconsolable at the final whistle of their controversial play-off defeat by France which ended their dreams of playing in South Africa next summer.

Duff and his international team-mates looked on course to take the 1998 World Cup winners to a penalty shoot-out to decide who would progress, only for Thierry Henry's infamous handball to set up William Gallas to secure a 2-1 aggregate victory.

Duff's outpouring of emotion in the wake of the heartbreaking defeat has meant that he is now being singled out for stick from his club colleagues.

Character

Fulham midfielder Jonathan Greening told reporters: "He was pretty low when he came back from France so to help him we have given him some stick.

"A few of the boys asked him why he cried on the pitch. But if it was my last chance to play in the World Cup I would be upset.

"He likes to take the mickey, so he is getting a bit back.

"He is a great character and he will bounce back."
