Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez is hoping for a reaction from his players following last weekend's humiliating defeat at Spurs.

The Latics were thumped 9-1 at White Hart Lane with England international Jermain Defoe helping himself to five goals in the romp.

The former Swansea boss admits the defeat was tough to take and that it is important for his players to respond quickly to the thumping.

Wigan entertain Sunderland this weekend and Martinez admits that if they could play the Black Cats sooner they would in order to make amends quicker.

Reaction

"Last Sunday was difficult for everybody involved with the club, but we take responsibility and we need to react to it straight away," said Martinez.

"When you look at the bigger picture, it was just a defeat and three points lost but the manner of the defeat is something we need to bounce back from.

"We will be ready and if we have a choice of playing today or Saturday, we would choose today. We are that eager to rectify things.

"That game could be a real turning point for us to put all the good things into practice and forget about the bad things so far this season."
