Everton boss David Moyes hopes the decision to reject their proposals for a new ground can prompt investors to step forward.

The Toffees submitted plans for a new £400million 50,000-seater stadium but were rebuffed by Communities and Local Government Secretary John Denham.

The proposals included a shopping complex in the Kirkby area of Liverpool, which was to be backed by retail giants Tesco, and plans have been in place for some time.

With chairman Bill Kenwright stressing the need for financial backing, Moyes hopes the long-awaited decision will attract investment now that it appears their immediate future lies at Goodison Park.

"It is disappointing for the club but I don't think I'd have bought Everton when they were in the situation of will they get Kirkby, won't they get Kirkby," said the Toffees boss.

"One way or another we needed this decision as it has been hanging over us for a couple of years.

"If there are any buyers out there - and Bill Kenwright has said if there is anyone he would be willing to speak to them and do business - this may well force them out of the woodwork.

"I also think Liverpool council have said to us many times there are sites for us in the city so I'm looking forward to hearing what they can come up with.

"But I love Goodison and if I thought it could be fixed and put in the condition we want that would give me the biggest thrill.

"But maybe in the world just now the viable cost of it can't happen."

The decision has prompted speculation of the possibility of a ground-share with rivals Liverpool, who are struggling to finance their own new stadium, with the sides set to meet on Sunday in the Premier League.
