Sol Campbell has ended his contractual dispute with Notts County and is now free to resume his playing career.

The one-time England international was enticed to ambitious League Two outfit County in the summer despite offers to stay in the Premier League.

It proved to be an ill-fated decision though as Campbell left Meadow Lane just

one game into a lucrative five-year deal.

Despite strong interest from Newcastle United the accomplished stopper has been caught in limbo because of the dispute.

However, Professional Footballers' Association chief Gordon Taylor has confirmed the former Portsmouth, Arsenal and Tottenham defender has reached a settlement with County which sees the Meadow Lane club release the player's registration.

"Sol Campbell is now a free agent," said Taylor.

"His contract dispute has been resolved and he is free to pursue football in the January transfer window. He can sign for any club he wants now."

Although Campbell is reportedly free to sign for a club immediately, he is not expected to return to action until the New Year.

Campbell has been training with Arsenal to keep up his fitness, although Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has ruled out the possibility of his returning to the club permanently.

The Magpies are the favourites to land his signature, with Campbell himself admitting in October that he was keen on a move to the North East, although West Brom have also shown an interest.
