Thomas Vermaelen has hailed Arsene Wenger's vision for Arsenal, insisting the young side can win trophies by playing good football.

The Belgium international was brought in by Wenger over the summer to add some steel to a side that many pundits believed was too easy to roll over.

Vermaelen has proved a success in the role - earning the nickname 'The Verminator' - as the Gunners currently sit fourth in the table.

And despite his tough-guy image, Vermaelen completely endorses Wenger's ethos of playing the game in a beautiful way - believing they can achieve success with flamboyance, just as Barcelona did last season.

Speaking ahead of Sunday's clash at Liverpool, which is being screened live on Sky Sports 1 and Sky Sports HD1 at 4pm, Vermaelen told the News of the World: "I don't mind if people call me The Verminator, because if they think I can help toughen the team up when needed, good. I think I can do that.

Vision

"But the main reason I like playing for Arsenal is the vision of the boss, the way he wants us to play.

"I believe we can win trophies playing this way.

"What is the vision? The vision is basically for a young team who all share the same philosophy to play good football, to grow and eventually win a big trophy.

"I know there are many critics who say that playing a certain way then good things can't happen.

"But maybe they should just think for a while and look at how a team like Barcelona has grown and how they play.

"Look around at their side. They don't have many strong players but they have been winning big trophies."
